# Why is my journal stuck uploading or not visible to others?

When you publish a journal entry, it's saved on your device first, then your photos upload in the background. Other people can only see the entry once all its photos have finished uploading.

###### What the icons mean
* A grey cloud icon with an arrow means the entry is saved on your device and still uploading or syncing.
* A red warning triangle means the upload failed because the original photo files can no longer be found on your device, for example if the photos were deleted or your phone's storage was cleared before the upload finished.

###### Why uploads get stuck
Uploads retry automatically in a few situations:

* When you reopen the journal or story screen
* When the app returns to the foreground
* When your connectivity comes back
* Periodically in the background, roughly every 15 minutes

There's no manual retry button, so if an upload looks stuck, one of the situations above needs to happen for it to try again.

###### How to fix a stuck upload
1. Keep the app open on the journal screen with a stable internet connection.
2. Toggle Airplane Mode off and on to force your device to reconnect.
3. Turn off any VPN. A VPN can make the app think you're offline, which blocks the upload.
4. Don't delete the photos from your phone until the entry has finished syncing. Once the original files are gone, the upload can't complete.

###### Editing a published entry
You can edit the title, date, text, and photos of an entry once it has synced. While the cloud icon is still showing, the **Edit** option stays greyed out until the entry finishes uploading.

###### Good to know
* You can include up to 25 photos per journal entry. Large photos are automatically resized before upload.

* You can save an entry as a draft using **Save as draft**, then open it later and tap publish when you're ready.
* Journal dates can only be chosen within the destination's date range. For past trips, create the trip with past dates first, then your journal entry can use those dates too.
